Our Story

Missoula's longest-serving eye care practice

Rocky Mountain Eye Center has called Missoula home since 1945. Through decades of change in medicine and technology, one thing has remained constant — a genuine commitment to the vision and eye health of every patient who walks through our door.

Dr. Wayne Mutter and Dr. Mark Mutter lead a practice built on relationships, not throughput. Our patients know our doctors by name, and our doctors know theirs. That continuity of care is what keeps Missoulians returning generation after generation — and what earns us a 4.95-star rating from our patients.

FAQ

Your questions answered

Are you currently accepting new patients?

Yes — Rocky Mountain Eye Center warmly welcomes new patients of all ages. Call us at (406) 541-3937 or use the appointment form above to schedule your first visit.

How often should I get an eye exam?

Most adults should have a comprehensive eye exam every one to two years. If you have diabetes, glaucoma risk, or a history of eye conditions, annual exams are recommended. Children should be seen at 6 months, 3 years, and before starting school — then annually throughout school years.

What insurance plans do you accept?

Rocky Mountain Eye Center works with many major insurance plans. Please call us at (406) 541-3937 before your appointment so our team can verify your coverage and answer any billing questions.

Do you offer same-day appointments for eye emergencies?

Yes. We reserve appointment slots for urgent eye care — sudden vision changes, eye pain, foreign body, or suspected eye infections. Call us first thing in the morning at (406) 541-3937 and our team will do their best to see you the same day.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Please bring a valid photo ID, your insurance card, a list of current medications, and any existing eyeglasses or contact lens prescriptions. If you wear contacts, bring your current lenses or the box with the prescription information.

Do you have an optical shop for eyeglasses and contacts?

Yes — we operate a full-service on-site optical shop with a wide selection of frames, lenses, and contact lens brands. Our opticians can help you find the right fit for your style, lifestyle, and prescription after your exam.

How do I know if I need to see a doctor for my cataract?

Cataracts develop gradually. If you notice cloudy or blurred vision, increased glare from headlights or sunlight, fading colors, or difficulty reading even with glasses, it may be time for an evaluation. Our doctors will assess the stage of your cataract and advise on the best next steps.
